Description
English: SASANIAN KINGS. Yazdgird (Yazdgard) I. AD 399-420. AR Drachm (26mm, 4.13 g, 3h). AT (Azerbaijan) mint. Bust right on floral ornament, wearing mural crown with frontal crescent and korymbos / Fire altar with ribbons; attendants flanking, crescents flanking flames, at (in Pahlavi [SNS III var. 4]) to right. SNS Type Ib1/1a, var. 4; Sunrise –. Bright surfaces, slightly wavy flan, a few small scuffs on obverse. EF. Rare. There appears to be two small curved lines following the mint signature, AT. While this appears to be the letter S, these curved lines are almost certainly “filler” characters to fill out the space between the mintmark and the lower leg of the attendant. This is illustrated on the opposite side of the reverse, where the same space is filled with a pseudo-legend that is almost entirely composed of such curved lines.
