SARS-CoV-2 structure & genome

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: SARSCoV2 belongs to the family Coronaviridae, genus beta-coronavirus group 2b. It belongs to the group IV viruses of the Baltimore classification. This virus has an envelope and its size is approximately 100-160 nanometers. The envelope has outwardly projecting spicules made up of trimers of glycoprotein S. The E and M proteins, essential for virus assembly, are also located in the envelope. Inside it is located the helical nucleocapsid formed by the virus genome surrounded by protein N. The genome consists of a positive-sense single-stranded RNA molecule of about 30 Kb. The structure is very similar to messenger RNA, with a cap positioned at the 5' end and a poly adenine tail at the 3' end. Genes encoding regulatory proteins are located at the 5' end and those encoding structural proteins (S, E, M, N) at 3'. Regulatory genes are organized in two reading frames (ORF1 and ORF2), these genes will lead to, among other proteins, the protease PLpro and 3CLpro, the enzyme RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) and the helicase (Hel).
