Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The house, at 355 E. Palace Ave. across from La Posada de Santa Fe, was constructed in the late 19th century by French artisans brought to Santa Fe by Archbishop Jean Baptiste Lamy to build the St. Francis Cathedral. A retaining wall in front of the Hinojos House was made of stone left over from the cathedral’s construction.

The house is made of local adobes, but many of its exterior design features are reminiscent of Louisiana architecture. It has a pitched, terne metal roof with four brick chimneys, a long, ornate portal and a bay window. The property, held by a family trust managed by First National Bank, was added to the State Register of Cultural Properties in 1969. The property is currently on the market for $900,000.

A garage and casita on the half-acre property were not damaged in the fire, which the city fire chief has called arson. Though, no one has been arrested in the case.

In 2013, the Historic Preservation Division gave the trustee permission to stockpile historic materials for reuse, shore up the damaged structure and to restore the building by reconstructing the damaged portions, but the restoration project was never initiated.
