被写体の説明

南柏駅北方・流山市と柏市の市境にある上野牧の野馬堀。「17号豊四季第一緑地」の一部として保存されている。所在地は柏市内だが、流山市教育委員会が立てた説明看板が道路側に立てられている。

野馬堀は、堀を中心に、二重の土手が囲むという構造になっている。牧内側の土手は馬が怪我をするのを避けるために低くなだらかになっており、牧外側の土手は馬の逃走を防ぐために高く急斜面になっている。写真右側が上野牧内側で、土手は低くなだらかである。写真左側が上野牧外側で、土手は高く急峻になっている。
