Manuscript letter

[printed letterhead: Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute]
Hampton, Va., Dec. 28, 1896.
Miss Alice Longfellow,
Dear Miss Longfellow,-
This letter would have been sent a week ago, had Lucinda Palmer not left for the holidays. The very day your letter came and with it the Christmas greetings for you [sic] scholarship students, I had selected Lucinda to take the place of Katie Hunter, who graduated last spring.
Last year Miss Richards assigned you Phebe Baird, as she seemed to have no available boys. This year she is short of girls, but has a very good boy, Tatyopa, She will soon send a letter from him. He was delighted to receive the package from you. I had asked Phebe to write before I knew of the change, and will send her letter along, for I am sure you will enjoy it.
Lucinda is in our lowest day school class. She has improved much since she [p. 2] entered school. Evidently she had few home advantages, and so we feel that the lessons of most importance to her are not those of the class room but those that will teach her how to live.
With very hearty thanks for your kind interest in Hampton and in your special students,
Very truly yours,
M.J. Sherman.
