English: 5,586 GRT cargo steamship Seneca in port, circa 1917. Wigham Richardson of Wallsend, Northumberland launched her in 1900 as Wartburg for DDG „Hansa“. Norddeutscher Lloyd bought her in 1906–07 and renamed her Tübingen. When the First World War broke out in 1914 she took refuge in a US port. When the USA entered the First World War in April 1917 she was seized, placed under US Shipping Board administration and renamed Seneca. In February 1918 she was commissioned into the US Navy as USS Wabash (ID-1824). In April 1919 she was decommissioned and returned to the US Shipping Board. The North Atlantic and Western Steamship Co operated her until 1924–25, when she was sold to Italian owners. |
