Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Labour Corps policeman, Western Front, during World War I. This photograph shows a black Labour Corps policeman being given instructions by a white officer. The same policeman is in a group photograph of native policemen, taken in the same camp. They are all probably members of the South African Native Labour Contingent (SANLC). The photograph must have been taken after the end of February, 1917, when the Labour Camps were set up on the Western Front.

The black South Africans were treated with extreme racism. They were not allowed to act in a military capacity, they were segregated and, unlike some other native labour contingents, they were not awarded any medals after the war.
[Original reads: 'A, S.M. giving a native policeman instructions.']
