Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Narasingappatti lies 20 kms away from Madurai, on Madurai-Melur Highway. From Narasingapatti 4 kms journey will take us to Arittapatti village.

The Cave: The cave is excavated on the northern side of the Arittapatti hillock. Cement steps facilitate us to reach the cave from the foot of the hillock. A Nandhi is seen in front of the cave which is a later addition.

Structure of the cave: The basic structure includes the facade, (முகப்பு), front mandabam (முகமண்டபம்), sanctum sanctorium (கருவறை) and niches (கோட்டங்கள்).

The sculptures present in the cave are: Sanctum sanctorium: Garbagraha is square in shape. The Avudai and the Linga banam are carved in the mother rock itself. (தாய்ப்பாறை லிங்கம்).

Dwarapalagars (துவாரபலகர்கள்are seen in both sides on the entrance of Garbagruha. These dvarapalas may be the later added strucures.

Ganapathy (பிள்ளையார்) is found in the southern niche and in the Northern niche a sculpture of a male deity is also seen. (வட கோட்டச் சிற்பம்). Some scholars say it is Laguleesar which is denied by Dr. Kalaikovan.

Timeline of the cave: Incriptions were not found anywhere in and around the cave so based on the architectural features, Arittapatti cave can be dated to 8th century A.D.
