English: Allegory of the prosperity of the United Provinces of the Netherlands, with, in the background, a general and detailed profile of Amsterdam seen from the IJ, which is filled with sailing ships representing the country’s provinces. Named places and monuments of Amsterdam are ’t Rijsen hooft, Montelbaanstoren, Zuiderkerk, Oude Kerk, Koopmansbeurs, ’tstathuijs, Nieuwe Kerk, Haringpakkerstoren and De Nieuwe stadt. At the top are 4 cartouches with views of Vlissingen, Middelburg, Rotterdam and Enkhuizen (the country’s other most important sea trading places at the time), as well as 6 medallions with the bust portraits of Maurice of Nassau, Joris van Spilbergen, Olivier van Noort, Jan Huyghen van Linschoten, Willem Barents and Jacob van Heemskerck. In the bottom left corner is the printer’s dedication to Maurice of Nassau and, in the bottom right, a dedication to the admiralties of Holland, Zeeland and West Friesland. |
