Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Native, yearlong green, perennial, large, dense, tussocky grass to 1.2 m tall. Leaves are grey-green to 40 cm long; narrow, often rolled and hairy. Ligule is hairy. Flowerheads are tall, open panicles with prominent orange-red anthers. Flowers from late spring to summer. Common, sometimes dominant in grassy open forest and woodland especially on shallow, infertile, sedimentary soils; a relic species where woodland has been cleared. Generally avoided by stock due to its tough leaves and the high proportion of dead leaves in the tussock. Important “indicator” species of light, infertile soils that need special management. Valuable species for protection against erosion on slopes and ridges. Conservatively graze to maintain populations.
