Phoenix Girl Merit Winner. Ruth E. Lindauer, 18, of 1429 E. Dessert Park, Phoenix, is one of 1,400 winners of RCA Merit Scholarships across the country. She plans to attend Reed College in Portland, Oregon and major in mathematics. She graduated from North Phoenix- High School this spring. Scholarship recipients were selected from 1(1.000 finalists in the annual nationwide competition. Awards range from $100 to $fi,000. The amount of each is based on individual financial need. Ruth was active in many school organizations, including National Honor Society and Teens Against Polio. She won 15 bowling trophies, including one national and four state awards. She played cornet in the North High concert band. Ruth said she is spending this summer at baby-sitting jobs and at making her wardrobe for college. She said she became interested in mathematics because of an excellent program at North. She said she wouldn't have been able to go to Reed College without the scholarship.
