Title
Russian hemp bale seal
Description
English: A lead alloy Russian bale seal dating from the 19th century. The seal is from Archangel and is a quality control seal for Tow (hemp). The seal is a circular disc with a hole through it sideways (Bulla type). Both sides are stamped with a cyrillic inscription. The Peacehavens website is a very useful resource on Russian seals. Comparison to examples listed there help understand the coded information. This example is very similar to number ARC LO3 (<a href="http://peacehavens.co.uk/BSARCHANGEL.htm">http://peacehavens.co.uk/BSARCHANGEL.htm</a>).

Obverse: ДЕСЯТ / TИMO: ЗB / ЯГИHЬ meaning Manager Timothy Zvyagin. (ДЕСЯТ is a form of Inspector Rank for the manager who overlooked 10 inspectors carrying out the bracking (inpsection) process on the bundle to which the seal was fastened).

Reverse: APX.БP / KУДEЛЬH / 1-CORTЪ / B. AE[D] / (18--). This translates as Archangel (the name of the port; APX. is short for APXAHГEЛЬCK), Quality Control (БP. is short for Brack meaning Quality Control). KУДEЛЬH means Tow (Kudel), the coarse broken part of hemp or flax after heckling. 1-CORTЪ translates as 1st sort, the best grade. The next line are initials. They appear to be B.AED and may match those on example IDS 604 (Peacehaven website). The last line is the date, sadly illegible on this example.

The seal is 28.9mm diameter, 4.3mm thick and is 21.13g. The seal is almost complete and has a smooth yellow grey patina.
