English: Reverse of Russian postal stationary sent 1886-01-27 from Estonia to Windau (Винда́ва) now Ventspils in Latvia. Frontside postmarked TPO, travelling post office, line 40. Postmark 39 was used 1883-1891 for the line St. Petersburg-Revel. No. 40 was used for the opposite direction, Revel-St.Petersburg. The TPO 39-40 and other TPO's on the territory of the later Estonian Republic fell under the administration of the 1st. section of the Imperial Post in St. Petersburg.
Backside showing two transits. Top right the first from January 28 1886: transit at Vilnius junction to TPO line 45 which ran from Minsk to Liepāja. The second transit on January 29, from end of the railway station Liepāja forwarded to the more northern city of Windau, arriving there same day (middle postmark). Cover has been signed by the Hamburg expert Carl H. Lange. |
