Summary

[edit]
Description The church was built in 1732 and is near the Catherine Palace in the town of Pushkin. It is the earliest surviving church in Tsarskoe Selo (Tsar's Village) and was frequently used by the Romanovs. Empress Elizabeth had her fatal heart attack here during liturgy and was layed out on the grass in front of the church. After the revolution the church was closed and turned into offices. During World War II the church was in the midst of heavy fighting. The Nazis allowed the people to reopen the church but the building was heavily damaged by shelling. The building was not restored until 1962.
