DescriptionRush Limbaugh on BP's Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill April 29 2010.jpg |
On April 20, 2010, only 20 hours after Halliburton conducted work on the Deep Horizon oil rig an explosion killed 11 people and poured oil into the Gulf of Mexico. Rush Limbaugh deceptively is telling listeners that the oil is as natural as water and that environmentalists probably sabotaged BP's oil rig to stop future offshore drilling. These comments are not only dangerous, have no facts, but go against the assessments of the President, Governor, and scientific community. On May 3 President Barack Obama stated, "We're dealing with a massive and potentially unprecedented environmental disaster." Governor of Louisiana Bobby Jindal declared a state of emergency in the state. CBS News reports that 400 wildlife species are threatened, including 34,000 birds. The director of the Center for Biological Diversity, Miyoko Sakashita, stated, "The Gulf of Mexico disaster has shown with tragic clarity the absurdity of the claims by the oil industry and politicians beholden to that industry that offshore oil and gas development is safe."
