t the money.The land was good and well farmed, and their stockconsisted of two cows, a heifer, four pigs, fowls andducks, and a horse. This horse they hired out to docarting, which, it was explained to me, enabled themto live. I gathered that these good people did notfind it too easy to make both ends meet and pay theinterest on their mortgages. This rather bore outMr. Hansens opinion that 10 tondeland of that soilare necessary to keep a family, especially when all ormost of the capital is borrowed. Not far from this place I saw a herd of 115 cowsthat belonged to a farm called Hillerods-holm Gaardbeing milked in the open field by Polish or Swedishgirls. It was a pretty sight. Hillerod, to judge by the amount of building inprogress, must be a prosperous little town. In thewaiting-room of the station here were hung some verygood engravings. On inquiry I was informed thatthese and similar pictures are provided in such placesby Government to encourage a sound taste in artamong the people.
