• Inscribed upper left: Loudoun [sic] Heights 1864.
• Written on a separate piece of white lined paper: The Shenandoah valley from Maryland Heights. The sketch includes the valley country up to where the Massanutten Mts. divide in, forming the Luray Valley to the left, the Shenandoah Valley extending away into the distance on the right while between is the smaller valley called "Powers fort valley." On the right or Northern boundary of the valley, is the North Mt. range, to the left the rugged heights of the Blue Ridge, with Thornton's Chester and Ashby's Gaps. In the extreme distance, about the center, is Mt. Jackson, which overlooks the Battle ground of Strasburg, Fishers hill, Cedar Creek etc. Martinsburg and Bunker hill are just out of the picture to the right. Within its space however although not seen are the towns of Charleston, Winchester, Berryville, Kernstown, Newtown, Middletown, Strasbourg and Front Royal. The rocky bed of the Shenandoah river occupies the center of the scene. Loudon heights on the near left hand, and Bolivar hights [sic.] below and to the right,-dotted with houses and camps, and cut up with roads in all directions. The Winchester pike being distinguishable for some distance. Harpers Ferry, and the Potomac river are invisible being hidden by the brow of the hill in the foreground. Bolivar hights [sic.] is where Gen. Miles placed his troops when Jackson occupying the Loudon and Maryland heights compelled his surrender.
