Summary

[edit]
Description Built beginning in 323 BC, this temple, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, replaced two earlier temples on the same site, the first of which, built in the 700s BC, was destroyed by a flood in the 600s BC, and the second of which, built circa 550 BC, was destroyed by an arsonist in 325 BC. The third temple, one of the largest Ancient Greek temples ever built, stood until around 400 AD, by which point it was destroyed, as the ancient city of Ephesus had gone into decline, and Christianity had supplanted the ancient Greek and Roman pantheon as the predominant local religion. The city of Ephesus itself was in a slow decline, as Byzantium, later Constantinople, became the most important city in Anatolia, and a series of wars and invasions during the Byzantine period, as well as the silting up of the city’s ancient harbor, led to the once-significant city becoming a small village by the end of the Byzantine period in 1304. The temple’s ruins slowly became forgotten, buried under a field near the modern town of Selcuk, which was built atop the village that remained on the site of Ephesus during the Aydinid period. The archaeological site was first documented in 1869 by a British archeological team, whom excavated the site between 1869 and 1874. Further digs carried out in 1904-1906 uncovered additional relics from the temple. Many relics recovered from the site were taken to the British Museum in London, where they remain on display. The site today features scattered fragments of the temple, with a single column, made up of column segments uncovered on the site, standing on the site of the temple.
