Text Appearing Before Image:
, and as the excavation of the lastdwelling-places within the fort was now concluded, on theevening of November 12th I moved my camp back toKorgach higher up the river. On the frosty but brilliantly clear morning of the nextday I paid off my Niya labourers, new and old, and sawthem set out in great glee for the four days tramp to theirhomes. Then crossing the river, which in spite of thewinters close approach still filled a channel some fortyyards broad and two feet deep in the centre, flowing witha current of about a yard per second, I visited what oldremains Mihman, our shepherd guide from the EndereTarim, could show me in the riverine jungle belt west-wards. The closeness of the luxuriant tamarisk thicketsmade orientation very difficult. But in the end, after manydetours, we succeeded in tracing the debris of a roughlymade water-mill by the side of a shallow canal bed, and ata distance of nearly two miles from the river the almostcompletely eroded relics of a hut built with Toghrak
