100. RUIN OF ANCIENT DWELLING, N. XXXVI., AT SOUTHERN END OF NIYA SITE,IN COURSE OF EXCAVATION. CH. XXV SOUTHERN END OF SITE 295 excavation very trying and the air laden with haze. Asour work proceeded to the south the surroundings grew,if anything, more sombre and lugubrious, in spite of theappearance of still living scrub. The ruins had to besearched for amidst closely packed sand-cones raising theirheads covered with tangled masses of tamarisk, dead orliving, fully forty feet high or more. Ruins with splin-tered timber just emerging from the foot of sand-hillsand deeply eroded ground on the other side made upa weird picture of solitude. Nowhere did I feel thedesolation of the dead oasis so intensely as while wendingmy way through this maze of mournful tamarisk cones andsearching the confined deep hollows between them, thewhole shrouded in murky grey mist like a landscape in theworld of the dead. It was almost with a feeling of relief that I emergedat last upon somewhat more open gr
