ch the Karanghu-tagh men had striven to keep usfrom attempting the route. Near the top of the valleyprobably lay the Alpine grazing-grounds ofBrinjaga. Butto reach them while the swollen stream filled the gorgewas evidently impossible, and the fear of being obliged torun risks in attempting the passage might, more than any-thing else, have goaded the Taghliks into their obstinateresistance. Even now when we were turning our back on theirmountains it was impossible to get from them anything buta surly assertion of entire ignorance of any and everyroute. But I consoled myself for this by the splendidopportunity which the clear weather and the commandingposition of the Kara-kir ridge gave me for a complete seriesof panoramic photographs of the Karanghu-tagh region.The great peak of * K.5, with its triangulated height of23,890 feet, was, alas ! shrouded in clouds, and so also wasthe highest of the glacier-crowned summits on the water-shed southwards.
