Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Ruined buildings of Mid Cameron. The first-edition OS map (surveyed about 1860) shows both of these buildings as ruins. Each of them is about 5 metres wide. The south-eastern structure, shown in the foreground, is about 25 metres long, while the north-western structure, visible on the right, in the middle distance, is almost 30 metres long. Both of them are divided transversely into several sections, creating a large central room with much smaller spaces at the ends. One of the rooms of the north-western building has, built into its NW corner, a small compartment, about a metre square; see 1714688 and linked items for particulars of that building.

The south-eastern building has, built onto its western end, a rounded pit-like structure, which is the possible kiln of the Canmore report (see the end-note for the relevant link). See 1716698 for the main description of that building.

Other features are visible nearby, including several mounds and the remains of old field boundaries; see, for example, 1716759 and 1716794.

The ruins are named as "Mid Cameron" on the first-edition OS map; at the time of writing, Wester Cameron Farm is still in use nearby. Logically, there would also have been an Easter Cameron Farm, although no trace of this, even as a ruin, is depicted on the first-edition OS map; on this topic, see 1725319.

Wester, Mid, and Easter Cameron farms seem to be represented collectively by the name "Camrons" which is shown in the "Levinia" (or Lennox) map in the "Atlas of Scotland" (published in 1654 by Joan Blaeu, but based on surveying work performed by Timothy Pont in the 1580s-90s).

In the background of the photo, the hills visible left of centre, behind the tree, are around Glen Finlas. A prominent rounded hill, right of centre, is the Dumpling (NS4385); behind it are the hills on either side of Glen Luss.
