El primer Gonernador de las Californias, Gaspar de Portolá pasó con este lugar (1769), antes de ir a lo que ahora es Tijuana, y de ahí luego, fundar la Misión de San Diego de Alcalá. A unos cientos de metros se encuentra la Primera Frontera de las Californias, marcada por Francisco Palou el 20 de agosto de 1773. Actualmente se realizan las Fiestas de las Fronteras, con cabalgatas y con caminatas, se realiza en la primera semana de octubre.
