Description

Kupferstich, das Ruhrort und das Kastell im Jahre 1587 zeigt. Ruhrort geht auf eine 1371 belegte Zollstelle auf dem "Homberger Werth", einer Insel in einer Rheinschleife, zurück. An das dort errichtete und nach 1636 geschleifte "Kasteel" erinnert nur noch der Name der Kasteelstraße. Östlich davon entstand im Mittelalter ein ab 1437 mit Mauern und vier Stadttoren befestigter Ort nahe der Ruhrmündung: Ruhrort. Von dieser mittelalterlichen Stadt blieben nach der ab 1962 durchgeführten Flächensanierung nur Straßennamen übrig.

Der Stich von Franz Hagenberg zeigt die Eroberung Ruhrorts durch die Spanier im Jahre 1587. Die Darstellung von Befestigungen, Stadtmauer und Straßenführung entspricht nicht der Wirklichkeit. In den letzten Jahrzehnten fand man Reste des Kastells in Kellern Ruhrorter Gebäude. Ruhrort ist ein Stadtteil von Duisburg.
