Summary

[edit]
Description

NPS/Patrick Myers There are usually hummingbirds on the larger patches of Rocky Mountain Beeplants in the park (see photo posted this morning for a view of a large patch of beeplants). Some cool facts about hummingbirds: - Hummingbirds can fly right, left, up, down, backwards, and even upside down. - A hummingbird’s brain makes up a 4.2 percent of its weight, the largest proportionally of any bird. (People's brains are about 2 percent of our body weight.) They can remember every flower ever visited, including all flowers along their migration route. - They can see a wider spectrum of colors than we can, including ultraviolet light. - A hummingbird has more feathers per inch than any other bird, except the penguin, and some of their feathers have a design that refracts intense narrow parts of the rainbow spectrum, making the iridescent colors we see on their bodies.

- Because of their incessant intense activity, they have to eat about two to three times their own body weight in nectar and small insects every day.
