Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Ruby is a red, gem-quality variety of corundum, which is aluminum oxide (Al2O3). Ruby and corundum have a nonmetallic luster, form hexagonal crystals, have a white streak, and are very hard (H = 9 on the Mohs Hardness Scale). Ruby can be synthetically manufactured - seen here is a manmade rod of rudy under ultraviolet light (black light). The glow is fluorescence. When short-wavelength ultraviolet radiation, long-wavelength ultraviolet radiation, or x-rays bombard atoms, excitation of electrons occurs. The electrons do not remain in an energetically excited state - they quickly give off energy and resume their normal energy levels. If the electron energy release is in the visible spectrum of light, a substance glows, or fluoresces.
