En effet, cette virtuosité nest pas de la nervosité.Nulle part, ici, de ces à-coup, de ces mouvementssaccadés de la brosse, qui nous ravissent chez un Hais,et dénotent comme une impatience ou une fièvre.Rubens est calme, maître de lui ; sa facture estexpéditive, mais non brusque. Cest dune mainpaisible quil déchaîne le tumulte des couleurs et deslignes. Son travail, malgré sa rapidité, prendaisément laspect fini. Il emploie le plus souvent despanneaux de bois à surface polie, où la couleurhuileuse, fluide, ne dépose quun enduit mince etlisse. Ce nest pas quil craigne les empâtements,mais il les réserve pour les violences de lumière, leluisant de lacier ou de la soie,
