| Description |
English: Cast copper alloy hollow-domed, die-cut, two-part button with a separate soldered wire attachment loop. The front of the button depicts, in relief, the Prince of Wales plume of three feathers within a coronet with the motto ICH / DIEN in a scroll on either side. The three feathers and the motto "lch Dien", German for "I Serve", go back to Edward (1330-1376), the eldest son of Edward III. He was known as the 'Black Prince' because he had his suit of armour painted black, a very unusual thing at the time. He later became the Prince of Wales and the three feathers and coronet have been associated with Wales and the Prince of Wales ever since. Below the the left scroll of the motto is the letter 'R' and below the plume should be the letter 'F' but this has worn away, and below the right scroll is the letter 'C'. The letters 'R F C' on this type of button refer to the 'Royal Fencibles Cornwall' (Ivall & Thomas, 1974, 50).
Ivall & Thomas (1974) illustrate a similar officer's coatee silver button on page 50, Plate S, No.216, which was worn by the Royal Cornwall Fencible Dragoons from c.1793-1800. The backmark reads : IOHN WILLIAMS in raised letters who was a button maker on St Martins Lane in London from 1791-1800. |
