ign in gold wire thread, togetherwith some herring-bone stitching of the same material. These gloveshave a clumsy appearance, and mark the decline from the beauty andelegance of the Stuart and earlier periods; they are said to havebelonged to Colonel William Duckett, who served in Queen AnnesArmy under the great Duke of Marlborough ; they were at one timeexhibited at the South Kensington Museum, and are now in thecollection of the Author. No. 2 A PAIR OF LEATHER MITTENS A PAIR of fingerless gloves, or mittens, of thick brown leather;they measure only 8\ inches in length, of which i\ inchesforms a cufF of crimson morocco leather, the inside beinglined some 2% inches up with stout leather; the stitching throughoutis of a very coarse character, and strength, rather than style orelegance, seems to have been the object of the maker ; their appear-ance suggests a falconer as their original owner, and their date isprobably early sixteenth century.
