Summary
[edit]DescriptionRoyal Tyrell Museum (15254242656).jpg |
Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology opened in 1985 and had royal status bestowed upon it in 1990 by Queen Elizabeth II. The Royal Tyrrell Museum was built in Drumheller to help recover from the declining coal industry in the area. It houses a large collection of dinosaur and plant fossils and is open year round to the public. I'm sure Drumheller would love to have more tourists come visit during the Winter months. The museum is named after Joseph Tyrrell, a Canadian geologist who discovered dinosaur bones and coal around Drumheller in the late 1800's. He retired in Eastern Canada and there are numerous other places and facilities named in his honour throughout Canada. Drumheller was once an important coal mining town and coal can be found throughout the Red Deer River Valley. Coal mining operations was in deep decline by the 1970's. Today, you can still see remnants of this time. The Atlas No. 2 coal mine near East Coulee is Canada's last remaining wooden tipple. There are tours that you can take to go up the tipple and into the tunnels going uphill leading to it. |
