Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Royal Observer Corps Monitoring Post, Easington On high ground above the industrial sites of Dawdon, Easington and Seaham this monitoring post would have been in a fine position to observe nuclear destruction of Durham's coastal industry.

Characteristically a line of telegraph poles terminate at the site providing a communication link. It was built in 1962 at the height of the Cold War and closed in 1992. Several other ruined buildings nearby are associated with a WWII RAF radar station and possibly even earlier acoustic mirror early warning system from WWI like that in Sunderland http://www.sunderland.gov.uk/Public/Editable/Themes/Environment/scheduled-monuments/acousticmirror.asp. Details and photographs of this particular Cold War bunker can be found here http://www.subbrit.org.uk/cgi-bin/webdata_roc.pl?fid=988093720&query=pagenum%3D1%26cgifunction%3DSearch%26County%3DDurham&cgifunction=form

General information on the ROC and these posts is on the same site here http://www.subbrit.org.uk/rsg/roc/index2.shtml
