English: RNAAF (Royal Norwegian Army Air Force; later Royal Norwegian Air Force, RNAF, RNoAF): World War 2 uniform markings, rank insignia, emblems, badges, etc. issued by RNAAF HQ, London, in May 1942.
On 9 April 1940, Nazi-Germany attacked Norway, and the Germans gained control of the entire country in June 1940. Around 1,100 Norwegian soldiers were killed in the battles. After the defeat, the Norwegian Government-in-exile started building several Norwegian army, navy and air force units from the United Kingdom. The Norwegian armed forces in exile were remnants of the military forces of Norway that continued to fight the Axis powers from Allied countries (United Kingdom, Canada, etc.) after they had escaped the German conquest of Norway. In 1940, the Norwegian training centre "Little Norway" was established next to Toronto Island Airport, Canada. The Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNAF, RNoAF) was established on 1 November 1944, thereby merging the Army and Navy air forces. No. 331 (Norwegian) Squadron defended London from 1941 and was the highest scoring fighter squadron in South England during the war. Up until 8 May 1945, 335 persons had lost their lives while taking part in the efforts of the RNoAF.
