Summary
[edit]DescriptionRoyal Arms, west wall of The Nave, Hexham Abbey - geograph.org.uk - 749292.jpg |
English: Royal Arms, west wall of The Nave, Hexham Abbey This panel by the west door is painted on wood and dates from the first Hanoverian period, probably 1760 to 1800 in the reign of George III. The Act of Supremacy of 1534 emphasised all the claims of the King, including his position as head of the Church in England. His supremacy was underlined by setting up the Royal Arms in parish churches, often on the rood beam or on the choir screen, to replace the roods and statues that had been removed. {Source: Hexham Abbey Guide, p24. } |
