Description |
English: Royal Air Force Operations in the Middle East and North Africa, 1939-1943. Pilot Officer V C Woodward from British Columbia, Canada, photographed while serving with No. 33 Squadron RAF in the Egypt. Woodward journeyed from Canada to the United Kingdom in 1938, learning to fly at a civilian flying school before joining the RAF on a short-service commission. He was posted to No. 33 Squadron RAF in May 1939, and distinguished himself in the fighting over Libyan frontier, in Greece, Crete and in the Western Desert, shooting down 18 enemy aircraft and sharing in a further 4 victories. After his tour finished in September 1941, he served as a flying instructor in Rhodesia, before returning to operations as Commanding Officer of No. 213 Squadron RAF, again in North Africa. He then filled a number of staff appointments before taking command of the Middle East Communications Squadron in April 1945. |

[edit]This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. ![]() |
