English: Framed Latin charter with Great Seal of King James I, Dolton Church, Devon. With typed summary as follows: "I have granted & given licence to our beloved & faithful Thomas Monck, knight, & Elizabeth his wife, that they may grant & alienate by fine or recovery before our Justices of the (King's) Bench or in any other way, the manor of Dolton with appurtenances & 20 messuages, 15 cottages, one water mill, 500 acres meadow, 500 (?) acres pasture, 40 acres wood, 100 acres gorse & heath & 10 shillings rent in Dolton & Dowland, also the advowson of Dolton Church, County Devon. Dated at Westminster, 1 September 17 James I" (1619)
This relates to Thomas Moncke (born 1570) of Potheridge in the parish of Merton, Devon, and his wife Elizabeth Smith, daughter of George Smith of Madworthy, near Exeter. He was the father of George Monck, 1st Duke of Albemarle (1608-1670) |
