[edit]Roy Chapman Andrews Dies In Carmel Carmel, California; March 12, 1960. Dr. Roy Chapman Andrews, world famous explorer and naturalist, died at Peninsula Community Hospital here last night after a heart attack. He was 76. Andrews, who had been living in retirement for several years in nearby, Carmel Valley, gained world fame in the 1920s through a series of expeditions to central Asia from where he brought back fossilized dinosaur eggs. He succumbed at 6:41 p.m. in the hospital, where he had been brought following a heart seizure earlier in the day. His physician, Dr. Mast Wolfson, said he was visiting the former director of the American Museum of Natural History in New York shortly after 6 p.m. and found he "seemed to be feeling pretty well." Asks For Wife Andrews had just finished asking Dr. Wolfson to call Mrs. Andrews and let her know she could come see him when he exclaimed: "There's the pain again. I can feel it in my arm and my head." Then, said Dr. Wolfson, he collapsed and died. Andrews, who made dinosaur and mastodon popular words with Americans, was born January 26, 1884, at Beloit, Wisconsin. He received degrees from Beloit College, Columbia and Brown Universities before he launched his well-publicized career as an explorer and collector of fossils. World Trips. Beginning with an expedition to Alaska in 1908 for white whales, he continued world trips that took him to the islands of what is now Indonesia, later to North Korea and then on a series of six expeditions to central Asia. He returned with the first fossilized dinosaur eggs, but in the meantime had put in many years work on whales and fossil remains of mastodons and other prehistoric animals. Author Of Books. From there he continued some of his writing activities. He was author of the books: "On the Trail of Ancient Man," "The New Conquest of Central Asia," "Under a Lucky Star," "Meet Your Ancestors," "Heart of Asia," "All About Dinosaurs," "All About Whales," and many scientific papers and articles. He married Yvette Borup in 1914. They had two children, George Borup Andrews and Roy Kevin Andrews. After a divorce in 1931. Dr. Andrews married Mrs. Wilhelmina Anderson Christmas in 1935, who survives. Funeral arrangements are pending at the Paul Mortuary in Pacific Grove.
