Description |
English: Captain William Renton founded the Port Blakely mill in 1864 on Bainbridge Island's Blakely Harbor. In the 1880's the mill became the largest sawmill on the Pacific Coast and was a major employer on Bainbridge Island. In 1879 Hall Brothers Shipyard moved its operations to Port Blakely and during this period Renton built houses for the families of mill workers, as well as a bachelor's dormitory and the Blakely Hotel. Henry Ziegler is known to have lived in the mill company housing with his wife M. Augusta Meins Ziegler. The train tracks running alongside the houses carried lumber from the mill to the shipyard.
