Summary
[edit]DescriptionRoundwood Hill viewed from top of cliff - geograph.org.uk - 1213685.jpg |
English: Roundwood Hill viewed from top of cliff. This photograph was taken from the edge of the Lang Craigs escarpment; I had earlier climbed to this point, and was about to descend from there.
The background woods lie on the other side of the deep valley of the Overtoun Burn. On the near side of that valley, Roundwood Hill fills most of the foreground of the image. The hilltop area is surrounded by a metal fence, and contains the site of an ancient enclosure, within which are some cup-marked boulders: 1210994. The Canmore database (see the item just cited) describes the area enclosed within the fence as a former plantation. A few desiccated tree stumps can still be seen on the slopes of the hill; they are all that remain of the plantation, Round Wood. According to "Off the Main Road" (I.M.M.MacPhail, 1976), "only withered stumps now mark the thickly-wooded area which was cleared during the Second World War". For a quite different perspective, see 1213568, where the same hill is visible directly behind the sheepfold, and my cliff-top viewpoint appears at the upper right corner. |
