In the centre is abig swimming-bath next the schoolroom, in wdiichI noticed one of those gongs wdth copper tubes ofdifferent lengths which I have often seen at home;on this they learn to play tunes. After visitingthe hospital, a cool, airy, high-roofed shed, wdierethere were forty wounded men, laid up mostlywith broken arms and legs — casualties that hadhappened in the mine — we were taken througha door that is always kept locked, into a passage ;reminding me of the covered bridge by whichpassengers cross from one platform to anotherin a large English railway station, and venti-lated at intervals by small iron - barred windows. At the end was a big square hole in the floor, through wdiich we could just see the top of twonarrow^ iron ladders side by side, by which thediggers have to go up and down to and from the 5s^v4 ^

THE KIMBERLEY MINES. 267 mine. The black miners are engaged for threemonths, during which time they cannot leave theCompound. At the end of this period, if theylike to re-engage themselves, they can; and someof them were pointed out to us as never havingbeen outside the place since it was started twoyears ago. Even the overseers cannot go outsidewithout a ticket-of-leave. No money is used insidethe Compound, all articles being bought and soldin exchange for brass tokens of different fictitiousvalues. In the afternoon we drove with Mr Currey to Du Toits Pan mine, a huge quarry with pre-cipitous sides several hundred feet deep, at thebottom of which, as we peeped over the edge, the workers looked like ants. The sides arecovered with a network of wire-ropes, each pairrunning over two wheels and working a tub bywhich the men ascend and descend the mine, andthe blue clay is brought up. We were very anxiousto go down in one of these tubs, but I was alreadyfeeling very ill with another return
