The latterlooked flat and uninteresting in the far distance,while the island of Zanzibar, close on our left, washilly and covered with well-grown trees and thickbush. On one of the hills a big house was pointedout to me which had been built by the late Sultanfor his many wives, on his return from Bombay,where he had been exiled by one of his thirteenbrothers, and had there acquired civilised ideas.These to some extent he tried to work out in hislittle kingdom when, after his brothers death, heresumed his reign. At his own death he left eachof these wives a small private fortune and the bighouse to live in all together. At 11 A.M. we dropped anchor a short distancefrom the town of Zanzibar. Havino^ sent the letter of introduction GeneralHopo: had o;iven us for the Consul-General, ColonelEuan Smith, we decided to wait for the answerbefore going ashore; so I set to work and sketchedthe to^U, which looked very picturesque, althoughrather spoilt as a picture by the Sultans hideouspalace,—a high, square, whitewashed building, witha narrow wooden gallery running round the firstfloor, looking entirely out of proportion to the restof the buildino;.
