Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Round-leaved Sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) Sundew plants are common on these upland moors. Although they are individually quite inconspicuous, once the eye is attuned to picking out their tiny splashes of red, they are seen to be extremely abundant.

"They trap, then digest the proteins in, small insects, probably to supplement their nitrate nutrition because their normal acid bog habitats are nutrient-deficient" [Francis Rose, "The Wild Flower Key"].

The flowers, not shown here, are small and white, and are borne on an erect stem.

Two other species of Sundew that can be found here in western Scotland are D. intermedia (Oblong-leaved Sundew) and D. anglica (Great Sundew), both of which have narrow leaves (they are narrowest in D. anglica). Hybrids of both of these species with D. rotundifolia also occur.
