Description
English: Freewheel clutching: wedge effect and friction cone.

Left: the frame of reference R0 is the ground. The wheel 2 turns with an angular velocity ω2, and the sprocket 1 turns with an angular velocity ω1. We suppose ω2 > 0 (the bycicle goes from left to right); ω1 can be positive (the rider pedals), 0 or negative (backwpedaling).

Right: the frame of reference R1 is the sprocket. When ω2 > ω1 (e.g. ω1 = 0, no pedaling), the roller rolls free. When ω2 < ω1, the roller is clutched by the friction forces.
Français : Verrouillage d'une roue libre : arc-boutement.

Gauche : le référentiel R0 est le sol. La roue 2 tourne à une vitesse angulaire ω2, et le pignon 1 à une vitesse angulaire ω1. On suppose que ω2 > 0 (la bicyclette roule de gauche à droite) ; ω1 peut être positif (le cycliste pédale), nul ou négatif (rétropédalage).

Droite : le référentiel R1 est le pignon. Si ω2 > ω1 (p.ex. ω1 = 0, le cycliste ne pédale pas), alors le rouleau roule librement. Si ω2 < ω1, le rouleau se coince par arc-boutement.
