Description The Scorpion Too consisted of aluminum components mounted on a truss-frame, steel tube tail boom attached to a steel-tube fuselage enclosed by a smooth Fiberglas shell. A builder or pilot could remove the shell for easier access to internal equipment. Schramm and Everts based the Scorpion Too main rotor blade design on the two-blade, teetering system pioneered by Arthur Young on the Bell Model 30 helicopter (see NASM collection). Young's design was simple and lightweight. The most novel technical feature on the Scorpion series was the method used to transmit engine power to the tail rotor. Three V-belts coupled the long shaft turning inside the tail boom to the engine drive shaft and final tail rotor drive shaft. Nearly all helicopters used gear boxes to step the power from one shaft to the next but the Scorpion Too could not afford the weight penalty of heavy gears turning inside metal boxes filled with lubricating fluid. A standard drive shaft was not compatible with the lightweight structure of the aircraft, as it was too light to withstand the vibrations generated by the rotor system.
