Description
English: Weekly Press June 9, 1915 Page 42. Caption: "Miss Rhodes firing the first shot"

TEACHING PRACTICAL DEFENCE: The opening of "The Press" Minature Rifle Club on the roof of the Christchurch Press Company's building by Mr Arthur Rhodes. Mr Rhodes most heartily congratulated "The Press" Minature Rifle Club on its successful establishment. So far as the directors and shareholders of the Company were concered, they wished the Club all possible success. He (Mr Rhodes) had seen a list of members of the staff and the only objection he had to it was that it did not include the names of any of the lady members of the Company's staff. He hoped that would be remedied before long and that the lady members of the staff would join; if they did so, he did not doubt but that they would give a good account of themselves. ...he was very proud that nine members of The Press Company's staff had gone to the front... if more men had to go, he felt sure that members of "The Press" Minature Rifle Club would give a good account of themselves.

Miss Rhodes then fired the first shot, scoring a bullseye amid cheers.
