About four or five feet high, chiefly leafy at tlie ex-tremities. Branches yellowish green, or brownish,beset with unequal, scattered, pale prickles and setyc ;of the former the largest are falcate and the othersweak and nearly straight. Leaves of a dull glaucousgreen; stipulce narrow, flat, dilated, spreading, andcoarsely serrated at the extremities, quite free frompubescence, as is every part of the leaf; petioles some-what glandular, with a few pale, straight prickles ;leaflets 7, obovate, flat, simply toothed, very ca3siousbeneath. Flowers very large, of an exquisitely deli-cate, transparent yellow colour, always double;hractew none; peduncle and calyx either naked orglandular; tube hemisphserical. The earliestinformation we liave of it is from Clusius, who was firstaequaititcd with its existence from the inspection oflittle, artificial, paper gardens, ornamented with shrubsof dirterent sorts, among which were double yellowRoses. These, lie ascertained, were brought from Con-stantinople, and by means of some of liis numerouscorrespondents lie quickly procured living plants, whichwere probably the parents of those cultivated at thisday. Linnaeus nuist have been unacquainted with thiswhen he thought the yellow Rose the same as theSweet Briar. Considerable difficulty is always experienced inmaking this expand or even produce its magnificentblossoms. I am informed by Sir Joseph Banks that hehas had it growing and flowering with the greatestluxuriance when planted in the soil of a marsh.
