Gand. --- MORPHOLOGY AND FENOLOGY Life-form: phanerophyte. Description (I. Klââterskÿ, 1980): woody shrub with prostrate to erect habit depending on the growing conditions. Stems up to 2 m; bark green, yellowish-green or occasionally purplish. Prickles usually absent. Leaflets 7-11,20-60 x 10-30 mm, oblong-ovate to obovate, biserrate, glabrous or pubescent above, usually sparsely pubescent and sometimes glandular at least on the veins beneath, with glandular teeth. Flowers solitary. Bracts about as long as and enclosing the pedicels, soon deciduous. Pedicels glandular-hispid, recurved in fruit. Petals 15-25 mm, deep purplish-pink. Styles densely hairy. Fruit 15-25 mm, pendent, ovoid to elongate-pyriform, rarely globose, often glandular-hispid, red. Flowering: from June to August. --- ECOLOGY AND CHOROLOGY Habitat: mountain coniferous forests, mountain meadows, subalpine scrubs and heaths and stony places. Calcifuge species. Vegetation belts: montane, subalpine. Edaphic preferences: Si; Ser. Chorotype: European Orophyte Global distribution (POWO, 2022): native to Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Kazakhstan, Poland, Romania, Spain, Switzerland, Ukraine, ex-Yugoslavia. Introduced in Belgium, European Russia, USA (Connecticut, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Ontario, Pennsylvania, Rhode I., Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin) and Canada (New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward I., Québec). Italian distribution (F. Bartolucci & alii, 2018): native to Aosta Valley, Piedmont, Lombardy, Trentino Alto Adige, Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Liguria, Emilia Romagna, Tuscany, Umbria, Marches. Latium, Abruzzo, Molise. Recorded by mistake in Apulia and Basilicata. Absent elsewhere. Notes: in Liguria Rosa pendulina L. is present in the mountainous areas from the border with France up to the upper Vara Valley (Monte Gottero). It can be quite frequent locally, such as for example along the ridge of the western Ligurian Apennines (from Monte Beigua to Monte delle Figne) and in the upper Aveto Valley, but in general it is an uncommon species.
