Summary
[edit]DescriptionRopley station, Mid-Hants Railway - geograph.org.uk - 694608.jpg |
English: Ropley station, Mid-Hants Railway A train bound for Alresford pulls into Ropley station. The locomotive carries the number 601. I found some difficulty in tracing the provenance of this engine, as the 'real' No 601 was scrapped some years earlier than this picture. In fact this engine was No 3652 and was built for the War Department in 1943, and shipped to the Middle East for wartime work before being sold to Hellenic State Railways in 1945. In 1984, it was re-imported to the UK with a set of spare parts, and was restored by the Mid Hants Railway. At present it is owned by the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway Society, and is presented in BR livery as No 90775, following on from the BR numbering series. |
