Summary
[edit]DescriptionRoosevelt-Cottage-Campobello-2010.jpg | From the age of one, Franklin Delano Roosevelt spent most of the summers of his life on the small island of Campobello. The island is accessible by a bridge from the easternmost town in the U.S., Lubec, Maine, but the island is in New Brunswick, Canada. Because of this, the park in which the cottage and surrounding preserve is operated as the world's only "International Park" -- jointly owned and operated by the U.S. and Canadian park services. If you are an American history buff (or, Canadian, in this instance), I recommend a visit if you're visiting "down east" Maine. Campabello is where FDR discovered he had polio and is also the setting of the play/movie, "Sunrise at Campobello," about FDR's decision to run for President. Entrance to the park is free and includes a 15 minute introductory video and a self-guided (with helpful park ranger-guides) of the 34-room "cottage" and grounds. You can find information about the park here: www.fdr.net/home. |
