Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Roof boss, St Pancras Church, Widecombe-in-the-Moor Image of the 'Scapegoat'. The 'Scapegoat' is of archaic origin. Part of Hebrew ritual, on the day of Atonement, was to bring two goats to the Tabernacle. By drawing lots, the High Priest chose one for 'The Lord', which was sacrificed to him. The other, for Azael, had the sins of the people heaped on its conscience and was allowed to 'escape'.
