is usually described as a prettilysituated town, built upon a high hill. It isquite in keeping with the description, and isalso a place of much interest, as will be foundupon a close acquaintance, though it is un-questionably a curious mixture of old and new,of foundries, distilleries, and manufactories,which, at every turn, are contrasted with acelebrity and an interest quite of the past. Londonderry was formerly fortified, con-trary to the usual Irish conception of militaryscience and architecture, which favoured themethod advanced in the Spartan proverb, The city is best environed which has wallsof men instead of brick. There were originally four gates (afterwardsix) piercing the city walls, Bishops Gate,Ships Quay Gate, New Gate, and Ferry Gate. The Cathedral of Derry is a plain Gothicstructure far inferior in rank and splendour tothose of its class in other lands, and dates onlyfrom the early seventeenth century. The epis-copal palace occupies the site of St. Columb-killes abbey.

Londonderry and Giants Causeway 211 The chief event in Derrys history, and onewhich is called to the visitors attention atevery turning-point and stopping-place, was thesiege so graphically described by Macaulay. In brief, the event took place thus: A letter was sent to the Earl of MountAlexander at Cumber in County Down onDecember 3, 1688, giving the information thatsix days later certain numbers throughout Ire-land, in pursuance of an oath which they hadtaken, were to rise and massacre the Protes-tants, men, women, and children. This letterfurthermore warned the earl to take particu-lar care of himself, as a captains commissionwould be the reward of the man who wouldmurder him. The information reached Derry too late tosecure the safety of the city. The terrifiedProtestants were filled with doubt as to whatmeasures of precaution should be taken. Twocompanies of the Irish appeared on the oppo-site bank of the stream, and the officers wereferried over to make proposals for enteringthe
